When we think about castles, usually it’s the French castles that come to mind, particularly those in the Loire region, or the ones of the English variety. Actually, Italy has many beautiful medieval buildings they can call their own. There are more then three thousand castles all over Italy, and many of them are very close to each other: the perfect situation for a romantic weekend!

Starting in Milan, you can devote a few hours to the Sforzesco Castle, built in the fifteenth century by Galeazzo Visconti II. Visitors can enter the castle where there are several rooms open to the public. Then, if you venture along the Po Valley, it will be very easy to mix a leisurely walk and cultural sight-seeing at the Castle of Belgioioso near Pavia, the castles in Agazzano, the ones in Gropparello, or even more in the village of Grazzano Visconti in the province of Piacenza.

Tuscany is full of magnificent constructions, same as the region of Lazio. There are castles that overlook the sea, such as the Castello De Vita, in Posillipo, near Naples. From the terrace of the castle you can enjoy an amazing view of the bay of Naples and of the islands of Procida and Ischia.

The Castello of San Marco is surrounded by a classical Sicilian garden, between the romantic city of Taormina and the volcano Etna. It’s an oasis of beauty and wellness, where you can regenerate your body and your mind, and also enjoy the amazing Sicilian food at the restaurant Maestri Flavetta.
