Nautical style or sailor chic is one of those classic trends that is always in style and is versatile for all ages and either gender. The blueprint for this style is perfectly simplistic, mixing a combination of (usually) navy and white pieces with pops of color, certain patterns such as stripes or anchors, with loose and airy fabrics like linen pants or light satin blouses. The number one rule to achieve the nautical trend is to not go overboard…no pun intended. Although sailor chic is a classic look, many think of it as a style for the warmer months, for those seaside sun-filled days sailing on the ocean waters. However, a nautical wardrobe is one that can be worn all year round. Here are some examples for both men and women on how to carry over pieces you may already have into the colder fall and winter months ahead:

1- For both men and women, you may substitue the classic boat shoes and espadrilles with boots and leather loafers. Instead of light weight blouses and striped cotton shorts, this time of year calls for big warm jackets, layered with preppy scarves all while maintaining the casual sea-going feel.

2. For women, pair the perfect banana yellow rain coat, such as Helly Hansen’s, with your favorite light-washed distressed denim and a chunky cableknit sweater. For another way to recreate the most timeless and American cool looks with ease, take a look at Tuckernuck, a Massachusetts-based, all-American brand.

2. Alternatively, layer a classic navy blazer over a grey tee or a crisp pinstriped button up. Add an anchor accent to really top off the nautical feel. Mod Cloth sells a fantastic, chic blazer, but even better, they also sell nautical accessories for the house so you can take this lifestyle to the max.

3. For men, a key to the sharp sailor look is a staple peacoat, or a wind breaker worn with olive pants, khakis or dark-washed denim. At Quba, they even create unique jackets from reclaimed canvas sailcloth. You can’t get more “authentic sea-goer” than that.

5. Another main point for men is to get a great pair of leather shoes, loafers or boots to complement a nice pair of tailored pants and the perfect thick cardigan. Check out Allen Edmonds if you are looking for the perfect classic pair of shoes that has versatility along with durability. They make their shoes using superior leathers such as calf skin and cordovan. Then they combine those materials with cork footbeds to create unmatched comfort, making it feel like they were tailored for your feet.
