Surf’s up this season here in the States! Surfing is not just a fun summer pastime, but a physically demanding sport requiring athleticism and grace. It involves expert balance and proper form. You need to be sensitive to the ocean’s rhythms and intuit the waves. It’s a great physical challenge, and very rewarding to master: learning to be in harmony with the wild ocean is described as a life-changing experience for some. 

You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete to try your hand at surfing, but in case you need some motivation, here are our favorite American surfers to inspire you to dive in and hit the water!

Lakey Peterson 

At a young 20 years old, Lakey Peterson is already ranked #3 in the country by the Association of Surfing Professionals in North America, and #6 in the world, according to the ASP Women’s World Ranking. Since beginning her career in 2009, her star has been on the rise fast. With great form, consistency, and an inventory of dazzling tricks, Lakey’s playful style is a crowd favorite.

C.J. Hobgood

This recently retired pro is finally throwing in the towel after competing for 17 years. He won the World Tour in 2001 and has been performing consistently since. He is widely considered to be a good-natured ambassador of the sport, and an entertaining performer. He has a twin brother who is also a surfer, Damien Hobgood, and the two have made their mark on the history of surfing.

Kolohe Andino

Andino is another example of a youngster on the rise. He started surfing when he was 10 years old, and already has many accomplishments to his name at a young 21. He has won the National Scholastic Surfing Association championships more times than any male competitor in history. As his name becomes more and more recognizable in the surf world, and he begins to compete at more professional competitions, we are sure to see his career take off.

Courtney Conlogue

Courtney Conlogue is slowly moving her way up in the ranks of women surfers with every win. This year she placed 2nd in the semifinals of the US Open of Surfing. She began surfing around the age of 4, and she continues to build her career with heart and passion. She helps design the boards she competes with, and models gear for Billabong.

Kelly Slater

No list of surfers would be complete without Kelly Slater: The greatest champion in the history of the sport. Slater is adored by fans and fellow surfers alike for his power, skill, and technique. His famous competitive edge, along with his passion and drive, has led to his success. He is an 11 time ASP World Champion, including 5 years in a row. He is a record holder as being the oldest and the youngest ever to have won. He has 42 World Champion Tour victories. He was even honored by the US House of Representatives for his achievements in the sport. He is an exemplary athlete, revered as a champion the world over.
