Brows are the new lips! Because a good brow changes everything. It frames the face and will make you look put together even with just a very light summer make-up. Some say eyebrows shape the whole visage. Others go as far as to state that they can create the effect of a whole face lift! But how do you keep them looking good while frolicking in the ocean waves, dancing the night away or just generally sweltering in the scorching August heat? From punk pastels and bright hues, to bold and naturally thick looking arches, to a brushed up, textural look, here’s how to maintain the brow throughout the summer.

Instead of penciling them in carefully only to see them melt away as the summer day progresses, get them tinted. A brow tint lasts 3 to 4 weeks until it fades. You can get yours professionally colored at a salon or brow bar, or buy a tinting kit, available from many beauty brands. Makeup artist Mark Edio recommends beard dye, which lasts for months and “makes them look fuller without having to fill them in.” Go for sophisticated and natural in a light or medium brown, as Edio suggests, or revive the ’90s Grunge era with a bold pink or pale pastel! You can even bleach them.

Brow-volumizing fiber gel easily adheres to skin and hairs and is water resistant. This means, with a long-wearing gel you can splash around in the pool without your arches growing thinner with every dip. Check out Gimme Brow from Benefit. It comes in light and medium and is buildable. You can also use transparent gel over your favorite brow pencil such as the glossy Nars Brow Gel in Clear.

Some gels dry a bit stiff, so instead keep hairs in line in the torrid summer heat with a product that has some sticky factor, like the synthetic beeswax in Napoleon Perdis paraben and fragrance free Browtox Pack. Tarte has an Amazonian Clay Brow Mousse, while Anastasia Beverly Hills offers a pomade perfect for humid weather. Another option, in a pinch, is dabbing them with plain old Vaseline.

Aside from keeping your arches hot weather and water proof, this season really anything goes as far as styles. We prefer a bold filled in look (think old movie star glamour a la Sophia Loren or Elizabeth Taylor) or an ’80s feathered brow (Google Brooke Shields). If you can, get on a plane to Beverly Hills for a session with celeb brow guru Kristie Streicher at her beauty bar. She has perfected the feather look. For a wild night out, do a playful gold glitter (the sticky kind). Of course, whether you like yours straight, curved, natural or bushy, groom with caution and never over-pluck.

Yes, there have been rumors of eyebrow transplants surging thanks to model Cara Delevingne’s “power brow”, but we think that with the right tools, keeping your brows looking great through summer is no sweat at all.
