“Thank you master.” These are the words with which, after four consecutive years of success, “La Grande Signora”(meaning “The Old Lady,” the Italian nickname for the Juventus team) greeted one of the greatest champions of Italian football- Andrea Pirlo. The star player leaves behind his beloved Juventus FC to start a new life in the Big Apple in New York City FC.

This decision that marks the end of a cycle and a new chapter in a storied career, was probably determined the night of the Champions League final in Berlin, where Juventus lost against Barcelona.

When the news became official, Pirlo announced the beginning of a new path, explaining that he needed new challenges: “I’m here in New York to win the Major League Soccer.”

Andrea Pirlo is considered one of the most gifted midfielders in the history of Italian football. Intelligent and creative, he’s been given many nicknames during his career: the Architect, the Professor, Mozart, and the Master.

Pirlo was one of the brightest stars of the triumphant cavalcade of the national Italian World Cup in Germany 2006, which ended with the victory of the Italian team against French.

He holds the record of five championships. He won the first one with the Milan team. The last one he won with Juventus, the team that has played a big part in the last few successful years of Pirlo’s career.

And now it’s time for a new chapter. The Master has chosen New York, as well as New York has chosen him .

His new teammates await him with excitement. It’s not every day that you share the dressing room with such a football phenomenon. David Villa, a Spanish striker of New York City, former Barcelona and world champion 2006, defines his next teammate as simply “a legend”.

On July 21, the former number 21 Juventus will arrive in Yankee Stadium to stay for at least an 18 month engagement, with a staggering contract that will net between 7 and 12 million euro.

For now, Pirlo is in his favorite island, Ibiza, to enjoy the sea, the sun and his girlfriend Valentina Baldini.

After he returns from vacation, the inhabitants of the “city that never sleeps” will be waiting to cheer for him in Yankee Stadium, and watch him achieve new goals.

As he prepared to say goodbye, Pirlo again demonstrated class by saluting his last team, Juventus Fc, with an emotional post on his Facebook page.

“It can be difficult to transform emotions into words, especially if they involve four years so important in my life. I can only say a huge THANK YOU to all who have accompanied me and supported me in this adventure:  The Juventus FC, our president, and every single person that works there; my companions of many battles, lots of laughter and some tears; the fans and all those who have always followed with affection even in the worst times of my career, many thanks to all of you. Do not think it was easy to decide. Though it’s time to start a new adventure, I will never forget the bond I have with these colors. Until the end, Forza Juve! (Go Juventus!)”
